Sustainability in Mechanical and Materials Design provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Sustainability in Mechanical and Materials Design is an "open access" journal that gives online access, free of charge and other access barriers. This work is licensed under a CC BY 4.0 license.

 Sustainability in Mechanical and Materials Design also supports the Bethesda Statement on Open Access Publishing, which defines an open access journal as one that grants a "free, irrevocable, worldwide, perpetual right of access to, and a license to copy, use, distribute, transmit, and display the work publicly and to make and distribute derivative works, in any digital medium for any responsible purpose, subject to proper attribution of authorship," and from which every article is "deposited immediately upon initial publication in at least one online repository."

As an open access publication model, the Sustainability in Mechanical and Materials Design enables a free-of-cost dissemination of refereed research to the global community. Sustainability in Mechanical and Materials Design is committed to achieving the highest quality of interdisciplinary research. Authors publishing with the Sustainability in Mechanical and Materials Design retain the copyright for their work, allowing the articles to be reused and redistributed without restriction as long as the original work is correctly cited.
